The ancient village of Weeford is mentioned in the Domesday Book and was also one of the five original “prebends” that paid “wax Scot” or “Plough Alms” to the Cathedral in Lichfield from the beginning of the twelfth century. It is therefore likely that there has been a church here for many centuries. The current church is a very pretty little grade 2 listed building set amidst some wonderful rolling countryside, it was built in 1802 by noted local architect James Wyatt and can comfortably accommodate 120 people (although we have managed more!).

Today the church is the only building within the small and scattered communities of Swinfen, Packington & Weeford that the residents can truly call their own. We therefore take great pleasure in hosting regular concerts and other fun community activities throughout the year as well as making it available for meetings etc. We also issue regular newsletters to every dwelling in the parish.

Our worship is usually quite traditional in nature although we really enjoy the odd “special service” where we like to ring the odd change and invite everyone to stay behind for breakfast or some other meal dependant on the time of day.

We are fortunate in having very good relationships with three very popular local reception and events venues, The Schoolhouse Restaurant, Packington Moor and Swinfen Hall – each of these has not only helped us with our fundraising and social events but are happy to direct couples wishing to be married in church to our doorstep – as a result St Mary’s is becoming a popular choice for weddings, indeed last year we carried out 18 marriages plus a further 2 services of Blessing.

However, St Mary’s has not lost its local and personal identity and is still used regularly by residents of the village for Baptisms, weddings and funerals. Traditional services such as Harvest Festival, Remembrance and Christmas carols are also valued and well attended by the predominantly farming community.
